Opened to navigation in 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway serves as the linchpin with the Great Lakes/Seaway System connecting the lower St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes. The Seaway System, 3,700 kilometres in length, encompasses the St. Lawrence River and the five Great Lakes, and extends from the Gulf of St. Lawrence at the Atlantic Ocean to the western end of Lake Superior at the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. The Seaway is an essential part of the North American transportation infrastructure and a lifeline to business with the rest of the world. Based out of Cornwall, Ontario the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of marine traffic through this vast transportation route, which is vital to North America’s economy.
In its on-going evolution, the Corporation is seeking a seasoned legal strategist to join its executive team as the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary. Reporting to the President, the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary provides the necessary leadership to the Corporation on all legal matters relating to the management of the
Seaway and supports the Chair of the Board of Directors in managing the Board’s governance processes.
As an ideal candidate, you possess an undergraduate degree in Law and are a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada. You bring a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the role of corporate counsel or in private practice, and preferably bring working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing the transportation sector. Your demonstrable expertise in governance best practices and previous experience working with, or serving on a board of directors, will allow you to provide sound advice and recommendations on a broad range of corporate governance and board issues. You are an outstanding bilingual communicator whose excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment and diplomacy allows you to build strong relationships with diverse audiences and to provide general legal advice to all aspects of the Corporation’s operations.
