The Criminal Staff Lawyer is responsible for giving legal advice and representing persons accused of criminal offences. In addition the Staff Lawyer protects and asserts individuals legal rights and interests, and fulfills the obligations imposed by the Charter and the Legal Services Act. The incumbent will be required to work independently with clients on cases of varying complexity. The incumbent is expected to be able to prepare his or her own documents for court proceedings. The Staff Lawyer is responsible for circuit work throughout the Northwest Territories and will be expected to travel into remote Northern communities by air to attend circuit courts on a regular basis.
Law Degree and membership in the NWT Bar combined with some of experience practicing law in a criminal setting.
All candidates should have experience with practice in a northern or isolated setting. Good working knowledge of and experience in the relevant laws of Canada and the Northwest Territories and Aboriginal and northern issues in general is expected.

The Legal Services Board of the NWT classifies lawyers at up to five levels based on required experience in a particular area of law and responsibilities required in the position. The starting salary for the successful candidate will range from $88,595 - $145,529 depending on that experience. The Government of the Northwest Territories offers a generous pension and benefit package, plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
